What Happened Doesn’t Matter. The Belief You created does.
“Nothing ever goes away until it teaches us what we need to know.” PEMA CHODRON
There is an entire can of worms that this topic can relate to but let me try and clarify it a bit.
When we are triggered by some action or word from another person, it is often because of some long ago idea that formed in the back of your mind. It was probably put there unintentionally by someone you held dear or someone you respected, which is why it stuck. It was someone that mattered and so what they said or did mattered.
Whatever it was, it twisted your opinion about yourself and your “inner critic” found an opening.
Later in life, when you hear an inkling of the same thought, it fires a spark and you feel yourself reacting yet again. The reason is your inner critic showing him/herself.
You may need a little digging to understand why and when it happened. The truth behind the story is not always visible but with a little insight, you can figure it out.
Once you understand the story behind it, the triggers will have much less impact because you will connect the dots and understand why it affects you much quicker. That allows it to dissipate much more easily.
